Publication of the report “Responsible AI for Digital Cooperation in the Mediterranean Higher Education”

23 oct. 2025

This report, presented at the 2025 UNIMED General Assembly, shows the result of a detailed analysis about the transforming impact caused by Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education systems across the Mediterranean region. It plays a fundamental role in connecting policy frameworks driven by international organisations such as UNESCO and United Nations with national AI strategies and emerging institutional practices. The report calls for ethical, inclusive AI integration aligned with societal values and sustainable development.

Also, it demands higher education as a vital link between international digital cooperation agendas and national innovation systems by proposing the joint development of a Mediterranean Digital Education Charter to harmonise ethical standards, data governance protocols and the use of open practises through national borders, for example Open Data and Open Educational Resources (OER).

The report, which includes sixteen research about universities from the Mediterranean region, besides additional studies from Bahrain and Qatar, offers an extensive repertoire of relevant perspectives for developing adaptable policies and models to guide the AI-driven transformation of Mediterranean higher education.
