UMU students have participated in the START CUP COMPETITION 2024 of the UNIMED network held in Istanbul

The team composed of Rubén Moyano and Jorge López, third-year students of PCEO[1] degree Mathematics and Computer Science had the honour of being finalists in the Start Cup Competition 2024, an event organized by UNIMED and Istanbul Aydin University, Turkey. In this competition, the presented a social entrepreneurship Project ‘guardIAn’ based on the development of an innovative fall detection system powered by Artificial Intelligence, using neural networks that aims to protect our elders and fight social isolation through notifications in case of emergency.

The competition, focused on ‘Social Entrepreneurship in the Mediterranean’, gathered students and entrepreneurs from several countries, such as Lebanon, Morocco, Turkey, Oman, Palestine, Libya, Italy, Iraq and Tunisia.

“What we will recall from this experience won’t only be the excitement of competing and presenting our idea to a broad audience, but also the rewarding interactions and exchange of ideas with students and entrepreneurs from different cultures. These conversations gave as new perspectives and inspired us to continue seeking for innovative solutions that can truly have an impact on society Our fall detection project answers an urgent need in an ageing society, providing a technological tool which can improve quality of life and safety of our elders”, said Rubén and Jorge.

“We are very proud to have been acknowledged as finalists in this competition, which encourage us to continue exploring solutions that have a positive impact in our communities through the application of new technologies. For us, it has been an honour to represent Spain and the University of Murcia in such a prestigious event. We are grateful to Campus Mare Nostrum, the University of Murcia and UmuEmprende for the support and the guidance given to the devising of this project, which have been essential to make it happen”, they added.

These activities, as well as others from the international field in which students from Murcia are carried out from The International Excellence Campus Mare Nostrum with the support and collaboration of the Vice-rectorate for Students and Employment, thanks to the adherence of the University of Murcia to the network of Mediterranean, UNIMED, in 2019 through the CMN office.
