24 nov 2014

“Breastfeeding, feeding and the search for support in our environment to prevent overweight and obesity” is the title of the First Congress on Healthy Habits in Infancy  organized by the 'Mare Nostrum 37/38' International Campus of Excellence for Saturday 29 November 2014.

The venue is the Salón de Actos del Centro de Visitantes 'El Valle' in Murcia.

Organized by: Mare Nostrum Campus

Coordinated by: Asociación 'Lactando'. A breastfeeding support group.

Collaborating entity: the Nursing department of the University of Murcia.

Attendance is free by registering at: lactando@gmail.com, indicating name, surnames and telephone contact.

Limited numbers.

Rationale

According to WHO data for 2014, there are 42 million overweight children in the world aged under 5 years who are at high risk of suffering obesity as adults.

In the Region of Murcia the figure for overweightedness is 20% and for obesity it stands at 11% (2012).

The WHO is carrying out a systematic review of the short and long term benefits of continued breastfeeding. The scientific information available to date indicates that breastfeeding may produce long-term benefits such as lowering the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding during the first 6 months of life for optimum growth and development.

Later, babies should receive appropriate safe and nutritious complementary foods and continue to receive mother's milk until 2 years of age or more.
