European Fisheries at a Tipping-Point
09 oct 2012European Fisheries at a Tipping-Point, a book co-financed by Campus Mare Nostrum, was recently published by the Chair Jean Monet and printed by edit.um. It is the first number of the series "European Studies".
The book, edited by Thomas Hojrup and Klaus Schriewer, being the last one a teacher and researcher at the University of Murcia, has been edited in a bilingual version and deals with the drastic change that the privatization of fishing rights as well as the introduction of Individual Transferable Quotas could create in the fishing sector. Following the introduction, these new policies would provoque an irreversible track that would see the death of most of the existing fishing harbours and villages as viable coastal communities and would concentrate fishing rights in the hands of a few large mass-producing vessels and plants.
