UMU Signs the manifesto promoted by UNIMED form climate action
18 نوفمبر 2025The meeting between diverse members of the parties interested in the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), titled as: ‘For a green education in the Mediterranean: a cross-cutting challenge for universities’, gathered more than 40 academic leaders and experts from all the region in order to advance in the preparations of a new and daring initiative: the Euromed University Initiative for Climate Action, which purpose is inviting universities from the Euro-Mediterranean region to intensify their role in the fight against climate emergency. The said meeting took place last 27th of June, as part of the 2nd Mediterranean Green Week, and was co-organized by the UfM, UNIMED and the University of Girona.
The Euro-Mediterranean University Initiative for Climate Action will be officially held at the COP30 in Belém (Brazil) and invites higher education institutions to endorse a shared Manifesto for climate action. The initiative emphasises the urgency of academic leadership, since the Mediterranean region faces growing impacts from climate change, with a warming 20% superior to the global average.
The announcement aims universities to collaborate to ratchet up and coordinate their efforts, in search of a global and regional vision of local action, positioning mediterranean universities as key contributors in the transition to a fair, resilient and sustainable future.
With that said, we subscribe to the Girona Manifesto on the role of Euro-Mediterranean universities, not only to respond against climate crisis, but also to encourage human potential, protect our shared environments and promote justice for everybody, by committing to foster regional cooperation in climate education, maintain and promote the importance of climate education in official curricula, involve students in governance and climate action, and support smart innovation hubs to stir up actions and solutions to face climate change.
